GENERAL NOTES

Fakhry records the photo in his plate as taken at Ṣirwāḥ, but one can easily recognize M 185. Like other inscriptions on the walls of Baraqish, this one cannot be defined merely as a construction text: the list of the buildings is introduced by a formulaic expression which, together with the construction verbs (bny and s¹ḥdṯ) displays the dedicatory verb (s³lʾ).

TRANSLATIONS

English

   1  Yklʾl and his sons ʾlwhb and ʾls²rḥ, sons of Ġwyṯ of the family Ḥfd, people of Gbʾn, constructed, dedicated and restored on the city wall of the town Yṯl, all the walls of the tower ḏ-Bqrn, and the wall of the curtain of S¹lf the god (?) that of ḏ-Ndbn, and the wall of the curtain
   2  of ḏ-S²ftn, the façade and the back wall, in wood, cut stone and limestone, for ʿṯtr ḏ-Qbḍm, Wdm, Nkrḥm, ʿṯtr ḏ-Yhrq and ḏt Ns²qm, with the tribute they had to pay for the gods of Maʿīn and for ḏt Ns²qm, and with what they added from them (from their resources), and they were satisfied with these constructions with their tribute
   3  in the day of ʾbkrb Ṣdq, king of Maʿīn. Yklʾl and his sons committed to ʿṯtr ḏ-Qbḍm, Wdm, Nkrḥm, ʿṯtr ḏ-Yhrq, ḏt Ns²qm and all the gods of Maʿīn and Yṯl their lives, their faculties, their possessions, their dedications and their inscriptions against the one who may damage them, remove them and take away them from their place;
   4  and they are the construction and the dedications which the people Ḥfd constructed and dedicated, (Ḥfd) who notified this inscription, with hundred and eighty rb (180), which the people Ḥfd gave concerning the construction and the restorations of the walls of the tower and the two curtains.
