TRANSLATIONS

English

1  Lḥyʿṯt and his son Ṯwbʾl and his
2  brothers and their sons of the family Whrn, clients
3  of the family Mrṯdm, dedicated to ʾlmqh-
4  w ḏ-Hrn, as He bade them in His oracle,
5  this tablet as a prescription that required
6  the dedication of an offering for a child who is born, and ʾlmqhw
7  gave orders to them for that tablet; and may ʾlmqhw
8  continue to grant them healthy male children,
9  and for the well-being of their persons and for
10  their protection from harm and injury from any enemy; and
11  for what has been favourable and may be favourable to the family Whrn.
5we have accepted the translation for ʾṣf proposed with some reservations by SD. The comparison suggested is with the Arabic waṣaf "to make a declaration, a prescription"; however, the substantive cannot be a plural, which would retain the w, but rather points to a ʾṢF root//WṢF.
5-6Beeston 1937 a: 24 adopted the translation by C. Conti Rossini, who interpreted yʿbrn as "to be pregnant" and therefore translated: "for the women who are pregnant, in recompense for the children that they bear",
6the imperfect form of the verb yldn does not present the value of future, but of past progresive tense.
