Notes on support and decorations | «A fragment of a statue with the front still intact where the forepaws join the chest, and the neck stretched upwards in an alert position. It was made from a metal plate cast in the shape of an animal’s body, with small circular holes distributed evenly all over – some open, others blocked and filled by a black substance – of an average diameter of 0.7 representing the spotted coat. Spacer nails can still be seen inside used in the casting process for keeping the clay in place. The neck is shorter in the front and elongated towards the back and comes to an oval shaped opening at the top to which the head would have been fixed. The animal has been identified as a leopard and has its right forepaw raised in accordance with an iconography widespread in south Arabian and in Hellenistic tradition.» (Pavan 2009: 113). For a comparison of the representation of the leopard, see CIAS F 59/s 4/49.10 n° 1. |
