TRANSLATIONS

English

      [... ...]
   1  and the men [... ...] with him [..]
2  the town of ʿbdn when the citizens of the
3  town ʿbdn had consented to make their submission in favour of Ḥaḍramawt
4  and to fortify their town, and Rbbm gave
   5  thanks because ʾlmqh granted
6  [... ...] and the men with him, the town
7  ʿbdn; and they placed in the town a garrison force
8  and seized hostages from them; may ʾlmqh continue
9  to grant to them prosperity and the goodwill
10  and the satisfaction of their lord S²ʿrm ʾwtr king
11  of Sabaʾ and ḏu-Raydān son of ʿlhn
12  Nhfn king of Sabaʾ, by ʾlmqh Master
13  of ʾwm and their lord S²ʿr ʾwtr.
2-4Jamme translated the sentence nʿmw ... ... ḫys¹ b-ʿbr Ḥḍrmt as "avaient accepté de se séparer du Ḥaḍramawt", confronting ḫys¹ with Ar. ḫāsa "to break" and giving a negative sense to b-ʿbr. According to him, the lords of the town decided to separate from Ḥaḍramawt, so the author of the text came with the Sabaean army to reinforce the town and took hostages among the Ḥaḍrami people present in there.
For the translation of ḫys¹ "be submissive", see Beeston in CIAS: i, 56-58. Cf Ryckmans 1975: 216 "act perfidiously".
