Notes on support and decorationsIn the Catalogues 2000 and Simpson 2002 the object is dated at the 3rd-2nd century BC. The recent study by Fleischer and Schultz dates the statuette to the late Ptolemaic - early Roman period, between the 1st BC - 1st AD.
The inscription has been added after casting and (palaeographically attributed to the 3th c. AD) and as a consequence of its secondary use as a votive object.

CULTURAL NOTES

"Although the plumed atef-like crown is Egyptianising Graeco-Roman, the sphinx is probably not an Egyptian import but perhaps a product of the Levant" (Catalogue 2002: 134). Fleischer and Schulz (2012: 15) retain the possibility of an origin from Egypt as well as from the Levant.
