Textual typology | Dedicatory text |
The text is rather carelessly incised and is surrounded by a cartouche. Line 3. It appears in this text the relatively rare form of the causative stem, hẓll, instead of the more common ʾẓll. For discussion, see Déroche. |
3 | Abū l-Ḥasan reads hṭll and h-ṭll for hẓll and h-ẓll. |
English | |
1 ʾrs² son of 2 Bʿl ʾs¹d 3 performed the ẓll-ceremony 4 and set up the statue 5 for ḏ-Ġbt 6 and so favour him. |
2 | Sima, followed by Farès-Drappeau , takes ʾs¹d as a lineage name, translating "of the family of ʾs¹d". |
4 | The meaning of word ṣlm is unclear in this text. It has usually been translated ‘statue’ but this would not seem appropriate in the context of this inscription which is roughly incised on a rock face. Sima (pp 97-98) argued that it should be translated ‘inscription’. However, quite apart from the etymological difficulties, this also does not seem appropriate, since if carving an inscription was part of the ceremony, why is it mentioned relatively seldom in the ẓll texts. In the absence so far of a convincing interpretation, we have left the word ṣlm untranslated. |
