The reading suggested follows Mazzini 2004 b. | |
1 | The reading of the beginning of the inscription is based on a second copy of the text made by Glaser and studied by Rhodokanakis 1939: 47-56 (see also Mazzini 2005: 301-307); w-bny-h]mw bnw (Rhodokanakis). |
1, 4 | Qrnw must be considered a certain reading (cf. Rhodokanakis 1939: 47-56). The integration had already been suggested by Rhodokanakis in his first edition of CIH 609 and by Robin 1998: 184; on the contrary, Wissmann 1976: 432 had proposed to restore [w.]ʿw as an alternative name of Ṣnʿw, modern Ṣanʿāʾ. |
4 | w-g*d*yt or w-[fd]yt (Rhodokanakis), rdyt (Lundin 1987: 52); [w-ʿ]lmy (CIH). At the end of the line, ḏ-Mʿhrm (CIH and Rhodokanakis). |
5 | The reading w-kl-k-ḏ l yhknnn is also based on Glaser's second copy. |

1 And it is no (longer) on the responsibility of and upon [... ...] banū [... ...] inhabitants of the two towns Qrnw and S²ʿbm and then, and it is no (longer) on the responsibility of and upon all their houses, 2 their lands, their palmgroves, their possessions, their male servants, their female servants and all that possess and shall possess the banū ḏ-Mʿhrm [... ...] and their children; and it is no (longer) on the responsibility of and upon their elders and their tribe Maʿīn on the basis of all the written documents and purchase deeds 3 which S¹ʿdm ḏ-Mʿhrm has signed and shall sign; one purchase of palmgrove ... within their territory of Ẓbyn in the town of S²ʿbm ... or ... in this purchase [... ...] and purchase from the part of the nobles and the subjects 4 of the banū ḏ-Mʿhrm and purchase [... ...] their houses and what they possess in the town of Qrnw, Yṯl and S²ʿbm and (it does not rest) on the basis of all the written documents and the purchase deeds ... by means of which it is warranted that S¹ʿdm ḏ-Mʿhrm has signed and shall sign and claim title to; 5 accordingly, these written documents and purchase deeds and the (two) legal documents and the rightful claims may be broken, disintegrated, demolished, give away and cancelled and ... (these rights shall /may) be legally (cancelled) in relation to the banū Mʿhrm, their children, their descendants, their male servants, 6 their female servants, their houses and in relation to their elders and their tribe Maʿīn and in relation to all that possess and shall possess the banū Mʿhrm; and should they be challenged, they shall be made known and announced publicly (these documents); these written documents and purchase deeds 7 and the (two) legal documents and the rightful claims (are approved) by the gods, the kings, the owners and the tribes Sabaʾ and Fayshān and by their tribe M[...]m and by all the descendants and by every man, great and small, far away and near and then this concessionary 8 document was stipulated in the month ḏ-Ns¹wr, the first one, of the year of ʾbkrb son of S¹mhkrb he of the family ḏ-S²[... ...] bʿm[..]n and then this concessionary document is the one which was signed by Hlkʾmr son of Krbʾl Wtr Yhnʿm king of Sabaʾ and ḏu-Raydān (Translation based on Mazzini 2004 b with slight variants). |
1-2 | The formulaic expression w-ʾl b-ʿbr w-b-ʿly is rendered with a negative meaning. An alternative interpretation was suggested in Mazzini 2004 b and 2005 (301-303): "and this regards and concerns", although afterwards he himself changed opinion (see Mazzini 2010: 147-150). |
5 | "accordingly, these written documents and purchase deeds and the (two) legal documents and the rightful claims may be established with operative and effective and restraining and concessionary and valid effect" (Mazzini 2004: 188-189). The negative sense given to the phrase is a recent proposal by A. Multhoff (see Mazzini 2010: 147-150). |
