Notes on support and decorations | Stela with frontal standing woman carved in high relief. The stocky plump figure wears a tunic, with her large hands clasped beneath pointed breasts. Her large head makes up about one third of the body. The round, well modelled face, has a large nose with drilled nostrils, a small drilled dimple on the protruding chin, and large ears comprising three drilled holes. The outer creases of the eyes are particularly emphasized. The incised iris and eyebrows may have been originally inlaid although these features are highlighted with black pigment; it is not known whether the pigment is ancient or modern. Rolls of fat (Venus rings) on the neck are indicated by three curved lines. Bracelets or the wrist band of the garment are indicated. The head ends at the hairline. The stela tapers downwards and there is a roughly carved section beneath the feet, retaining traces of plaster, where the stela was secured into some form of base, probably inscribed. The sides and top are polished and on the back there is horizontal tooling marks. |
