Notes on support and decorations | A striking, well carved, male head with wide set incised eyes (originally with inlaid pupils), incised eyebrows tracing a strong brow ridge, a broad pointed nose, a small mouth with a faint smile, realistically modelled cheeks and chin, small protrusions for ears and a thick neck. Incised dots, made with a pointed tool, indicate a short beard, moustache, and tuft of hair just under lower lip. The head was originally set in an inscribed base or displayed inside a niche. There are rifler marks across surface of the face; the poll is roughly tooled whereas the back is finished flat. |
