Notes on support and decorations | Upper part of a limestone statue, probably of a seated figure on a stool like BM 12280; it is broken at the weak point between the torso and the heavy block base. The figure has a small square shaped head, small breasts, a thick long neck, a cylindrical torso, and angular shoulders and elbows, square hands with incised lines to indicate fingers. The face is extremely stylized, with the eyes indicated by parallel incised lines, the rectangular nose and small mouth carved as one unit in low relief, and with the chin length hair style framing the face. Incised vertical lines and horizontal lines form a criss-cross pattern to indicate the locks. The line of the hair is continued around the back of the head. From the reverse, the back and arms are defined. Traces of brown pigment remain on the face (as well as eyes and eyebrows), the shoulders and the neck area; it is likely that the entire figure was painted. A similar complete example comes from as-Sawdāʿ (Antonini 2001: 53, pl. 14, B 24); it is likely that this example also comes from the Jawf. |
