Notes on support and decorations | This seated female figure, with column-shaped legs, has an oversized head, cylindrical neck, angular shoulders and elbows, breasts positioned between arms, and shapely legs tapering to the ankles, which are carved free from the base. The freeing of the legs gives the figure a lighter, more realistic appearance. The short hair is roughly carved around the head, the eyes are not indicated (presumably these were originally painted) and the wide mouth is indicated with an incised line. Fingers and toes are marked with incised lines on square hands and feet. There is no indication of clothing. The spine and the back of arms are modelled on the reverse. |
