Notes on support and decorations | Incense burner with splayed foot and cylindrical censer decorated with a recumbent ibex in high relief placed on a base. Snake in low relief at the beginning of the inscription (probably a symbol). Traces of red painting. The object, although in limestone, is comparable with a group of bronze incense burners, as the Qatabānian Ja 862. Notes: the ibex could be used with the function of handle (see for example the bronze incense burners with cylindrical censer, splayed foot and vertical panel with ibex); bases with splayed foot characterize also some pottery vessel found in Yalā (De Maigret 2003: 90, pl. 12/5) as well as in al-Bayḍa (Rathjens 1955: 289-293) and in the tombs of Ḥurayḍa (Caton Thompson 1944: 87, 133, pl. 37/1-4 and pl. 57/8). For stylistic comparisons and chronology see Avanzini 2005. |
