Notes on support and decorations | This object may have been originally attached to a piece of furniture. It is decorated with a snarling pouncing lynx with long ears and a thick ruff of fur around its neck extending down its chest. The back of the animal is decorated in relief with a crossed pair of fruited grapevines. It is cast onto a plain L-shaped arm or bar set at right angles to the plane of body and which was intended to secure the object. Traces of the original clay core survive within the body of the lynx. There is a single filing mark on the left side of the neck, presumably from a previous attempt to test the quality of the metal. The sharply turned head of this piece suggests that it was one of a pair of antithetical protomes, possibly attached to a piece of furniture or to another object. |
