CULTURAL NOTES

The Mrṯdm family occupied a prominent position in ʿAmrān society. Many members of other families placed themselves under the authority of the Mrṯdm. In this inscription the author, a member of the ʾs²yb family, appeals to the god that he might be regarded with favour by the family Mrṯdm: ʾwrṯ-hw "his masters". The inscription furnishes an interesting example of the public role that women could play in ASA society. The author completed his military corvée for wrṯt "his mistress".
