TRANSLATIONS

English

   1  Thus decreed ʾlmqh in His oracle:
   2  that anyone who incurs a ban
   3  must offer a sacrifice, otherwise
   4  the priest must prolong his ban;
   5  and anyone who incurs a ban must sacrifice
   6  and must pay over properly.
2, 4, 5The key-verb ḥẓr is translated with "request" (Garbini) and "rape" (Jamme); the meaning of "incur a ban" is suggested dubiously by SD (75) and accepted by Müller, who compares it to the verb ḥrm.

   1  Folgendermaßen hat Almaqah befohlen in seinem Orakel,
   2  daß irgendein Mann, der unter Bann steht,
   3  ein Opfer darbringen soll, oder (andernfalls)
   4  der Priester seinen Bann aufschiebt;
   5  und (so) soll der Mann, der unter Bann steht, opfern
   6  und zukommen lassen, was recht ist.

2-5Das in Zeile 2, 4 und 5 vorkommende ḥẓr ist das Schlüsselwort zum Verständnisdieses Textes; Garbini (1973 a: 37-43) übersetzt das Verb durch richiedere "beanspruchen, fordern", Jamme (1976: 143) bei fraglichen etymologischen Vergleich mit arabisch ḥaṭara durch rape ëntführen, vergewaltigen", und Beeston (CIAS I: 15-18) läßt es unübersetzt; da sich arabisch ḥaẓara "abhalten, verwehren, verbieten" etwa mit den Bedeutungen von ḥarama deckt und im Sabäischen ḥrmn/ḥrm bzw. ḥrmn/hḥrm "Bann, welcher verhängt worden war" (vgl. hebräisch ḥēräm "Bann") heißt, wurde hier für ḥẓr die gleiche Bedeutung angenommen; um welche Art Bann es sich handelt , kann allerdings nicht gesagt werden.
