TRANSLATIONS

English

   1  ʾḫyt daughter of Ṯwbn, the Ḥanakite,
   2  confessed and did penance to
   3  ḏ-S¹mwy in Byn, because she
   4  committed a sin in their house and in the sanctuary
   5  and because she went out to
   6  a public place (?) without purification
   7  and because she committed sins several times, those she was aware of
   8  and those when she
   9  was not aware of; and she showed submission and distress, and
  10  she will pay a fine.
6For mwṭnn, Robin suggests "lieu public", while Beeston 1937 a: 50-51 suggests "forecourt".
7For bllm, Robin suggests "elle a été en état de péché à des nombreuses reprises", while Beeston "she committed small wrongs".
10For tḥlʾn, Robin translates "puisse-t-elle être pardonnée!", while Beeston "she was contrite". Jamme, analysing this phrase, suggests "et maintenant elle est purifiée" (Jamme 1996: 81, on the basis of the Yemeni Arabic "ḥalā"; see Piamenta 1990-1991: 105B). However, the verb also means "to pay the fine" (for the sin), which is a coherent translation within a context of expiation: see the translations of this inscription by Nebes 2004 a: 310, followed by Stein 2007: 39, "und sie wird Bussgeld zahlen").

   4  in ihrem Haus und im Tempel gesündigt hatte
   5  und weil sie nach draußen in unreinem Zustand

   7  und weil sie des öfteren gesündigt hatte, sei es, daß (darum) wußte,

   9  Da hat sie sich unterworfen und gedemütigt.

1Ḥanakiterin: wir die ʾAmīr arabischer Stamm, der auch außerhalb Südarabiens inschriftlich belegt ist.
