TRANSLATIONS

English

   1  Whbʾl and Ġwṯʾl descendants of
   2  Ḏrʾ Ḥm dedicated to their god and
   3  their lord Bashamum, master of Ḫrf and
   4  Nʿlm in His sanctuary Ḫrf at Ḥalzaw
   5  the bronze statue, in respect of what they petitioned Him for
   6  before this day; Whbʾl and Ġwṯʾl
   7  committed to Bashamum and His
   8  gods their wills, their
   9  material resources and their two sons Zydʾl and
  10  ʾlzʾd, and all that they possess and that may be a good
  11  omen for them, and their statue, against whoever
  12  may damage and remove (it); by Bashamum and their tutelary
  13  deities ʿAthtar ḏ-Ḥrm and
  14  ḏt Bs³rm and the gods of
  15  Ḥalzaw.
7-8ʾlh-s¹ww: "it is uncertain whether the suffix pronoun refers here to the god or to his sanctuary, since examples of both can be found in the inscriptions" (Prioletta 2013: 114, n. 30).
10-11w-ḏ-m l-s¹m [ʿ]ynm nʿm: "this curious expression also appears in the other dedicatory text from Ḥalzaw CSAI II,14 = RES 4336/5" (Prioletta 2013:114, n. 31).

CULTURAL NOTES

"The inscription Makyāsh - al-Zubaydī 2008 can in all likelihood be considered one of the last documents testifying to the influence of Qatabān [on wādī Lajiya], probably due to their direct presence at least [...] around the first quarter of the second half of the 1st millennium BC" (Prioletta 2013: 114).

ḏt Bs³rm: "This is the first known citation of this minor deity" (Prioletta 2013: 114, n. 32).
