| Notes on support and decorations | Oval agate ring bezel engraved with an eagle with the head in profile and extended wings. The eagle is grasping a snake by his talons. The snake’s body encircles the eagle and his head is facing the eagle’s head. On the top the symbol of crescent moon and disc. The precious seal, used for a long time, bears also a Kufic inscription (which recalls the Koran III, 188: "Glory be to thee, oh Lord! Keep me from the punishment of the fire"), evidently added by the new owner in the early Islamic period (8th century or earlier; cf. Walker 1962: 456). |
