| Notes on support and decorations | The face is carved in high relief from slightly translucent white calcite-alabaster with natural orange veining. It probably represents a female. The face is realistically modelled with lidded eyes and drilled pupils, a full mouth with small smile, a dimpled chin, stylized protruding ears, with a fringe or hair band at the forehead. The band is painted black, as are the pupils of the eyes. The face is surrounded by a polished surface, which probably represents straight flowing hair. The hair neatly squares the piece, possibly a convenient shape for insertion into a niche. The natural bedding plane is exposed at the back. |
