| Notes on support and decorations | Stela with scene in low relief, representing two men in profile riding a camel, not perfectly symmetric, one in front of the other. A vertical object (constituted by a long post ending at the bottom in a triangular element and at the top in two superimposed rectangular elements, which coincide with the upper limit of the decorated field) separates the two figures. The object, recalling a shovel, is interpreted by Pirenne (1965: 119) as “un vase à long col, vers lequel [les chameaux] semble dresser leur tête pour s’abreuver”. Pirenne (1965: 21) suggests also that the vessel symbolizes the god to which the votive offering is addressed. This object (even if overturned) recalls the symbol ('marru') of the god Marduk in Mesopotamian iconography. Both the men wear a long, pleated dress, with fringes. The right figure (to the viewer) is holding a club on the shoulder; a probable water skin is hanging on his camel's hind flank. The left figure is represented without weapons, with the right arm raised. |
